IO-Link: Functionality and Benefits

IO-Link digitises the sensor interface and, in addition to the current measurement data, provides further information such as the quality of the sensor signal, present ambient conditions or even statistical data of the measured variable. IO-Link relies on the components (cables, connectors) that have been used for many years for switching sensors such as proximity switches.

IO-Link is compatible with the existing sensor world of automation:

  • 3-wire sensors with operating voltage 24 V
  • Plug-in connection M12 (also M5, M8)
  • Unshielded cables

Advantages of IO-Link

  • Simplified cabling and reduced system costs
Measurements such as temperature, flow rate, force are usually converted by transmitters directly at the sensor into an electrical standard signal (0–20 mA) or expensive, multi-core and shielded cables must be used. At the end, the signal is then converted to "digital" on the controller. For security, a shielded cable is also usually used in the power interface.
This can be omitted with IO-Link and standard cables can be used.
  • Reduced costs for commissioning, diagnosis and calibration
The diagnosis of analogue measurement technology requires further equipment and specialist knowledge, which the system user often cannot provide. If conventional sensors have to be replaced or calibrated in the system, longer downtimes may result.
When using IO-Link, this can be dispensed with, since adjustment data is also stored in the sensor and processed immediately after installation.
  • Securing the process with status data and validation capabilities
By self-monitoring, the sensor can determine the quality of the sensor signal and report it to the higher-level system before a sensor failure occurs. Sensors can be specified with fixed types and also with serial numbers in the slot. For example, an unintentional sensor exchange (for example by mixing up after cleaning/maintenance) can be detected by the system and errors in the system can be avoided.
With classic technology, these features would hardly be possible or only be achieved with considerable hardware and software. IO-Link enables plant engineers to develop a safe and convenient solution at a low cost.
  • Optimal solutions for measuring several sizes at one measuring point
Sensors often offer a further measurement variable parallel to the main measurement variable.
Examples: flow measurement with integral temperature measurement or temperature measurement of the medium and additional ambient temperature measurement.
With IO-Link, multiple sizes can be transmitted and the system made simpler and cheaper.
